Dreaming of Greece
About the event
In celebration of 205 years of Greek independence, Moments. gallery presented Dreaming of Greece, a two-week cultural exhibition that opened April 18 at Dream Downtown in New York City's Meatpacking District to an enthusiastic crowd of artists, founders, and culturally aligned guests. The exhibition brought together the Greek and Greek-American community in a way that was both intimate and far-reaching. It was a night of connection, culture, and celebration that exceeded all expectations.
Curated by Vasia Makris, the exhibition gathered contemporary Greek and Greek-American artists, photographers, and cultural voices shaping how Greece is seen today. Through digital and physical works, the show connected Greece with its diaspora while introducing New York to a more current and dimensional perspective of Greek culture.
Rather than preserving tradition in a static form, Dreaming of Greece presented culture as something living and evolving, expressed through art, storytelling, and global visibility. Open 24 hours a day, the exhibition remained on view through May 2, overlapping with the NYC Greek Independence Day Parade on April 26.
"From the city that raised me, to the country that shaped me. We are bringing a piece of Greece to New York."
— Vasia Makris
The experience
art, conversation, community.
Opening night brought to life a layered cultural environment where guests moved freely between art, conversation, and community. The space featured a curated selection of vendor activations: Kosterina offered olive oil tastings; Skiinni brought signature bracelets; Telesto Designs transformed a corner into a pop-up jewelry boutique; A-to-Z Publishing presented a literary stand of children's books celebrating Greek culture.
The evening featured a live performance by journalist and author Evageline Plakas, who presented her upcoming book. One of the most celebrated moments of the night was the presence of Agapi Stassinopoulos, author and speaker known for bringing Greek philosophy and mythology into modern life. Agapi signed copies of her book in person, taking time to connect one-on-one with guests, sharing warmth and wisdom.

Investing in the next generation
Mati workshop with A. Fantis School.
As part of Dreaming of Greece, Moments. Gallery hosted a youth art experience inviting a select group of young Greek artists from A. Fantis School into the space ahead of opening night. Students took part in a private tour, met with Vasia Makris and artist BK, and each created their own interpretation of the Mati, the iconic Greek evil eye. Their pieces were included in the show the following day, with families and community members invited to attend and experience the students' work within a gallery setting.

A moment that matters
supporting Elias Manolis.
Elias Manolis, a young member of the Greek community, is currently battling a rare and life-threatening kidney disease. As his family navigates ongoing treatment and mounting medical expenses, Moments. Gallery used this event to help amplify his story. A portion of all art sales from Dreaming of Greece is donated to Elias and his family, easing the financial burden and showing the power of community in a time of need.
